If you’re a new parent, one of the most common questions you will ask yourself is how much sleep should my newborn get? It can be stressful and overwhelming when your little bundle of joy isn’t getting enough rest or if they seem to be sleeping too much.

Newborn Sleep Cycles & Patterns

It’s important to remember that newborns don’t have a regular sleep cycle like adults do. Newborn babies often have what is known as “fragmented sleep cycles,” meaning their nap times might be unpredictable and scattered throughout the day. While some babies may take longer naps during certain parts of the day, others may take shorter naps more frequently.

It is not uncommon for newborns to sleep up to 16 hours per day, divided into several short naps (30-60 minutes each) throughout the day and night. As your baby grows older, they will begin developing longer periods of nighttime sleep and shorter periods of daytime sleep. By 4 months old, your baby should be able to stay asleep for at least 4 hours at a time.

Should You Let Your Newborn Sleep During The Day?

Yes! Even though it may seem counterintuitive – because we want our babies awake during the day so they can interact with us – it is important that your newborn gets plenty of rest during the day in order for them to grow and develop properly.

Try not to disrupt their nap times unnecessarily; instead, create a routine around those naps so that you maintain consistency in their schedule. A combination of both daytime napping and nighttime sleeping helps ensure that your baby has enough energy for playtime with you during the day!
