Around half of women experience morning sickness in the first trimester of their pregnancy. Here are some of the ways how to combat morning sickness and find some relief.
Eat small portions
Eating large meals might upset your stomach. By eating smaller meals and snacks you might trick your body to feel less nausea. Smaller portions are easier to digest.
Eat often
Eat some food every 1-2 hours to keep your blood sugar levels even and to get all of the necessary calories for the day. Keep some nuts and crackers handy for the times when you aren’t ready for a bigger meal.
Choose protein-rich foods
Yogurt, eggs, milk, cold meats, nuts, and seeds will keep you full for a longer period of time. Foods high in protein are relieving nausea better than foods high in carbohydrates or fat.
Eat cold food
Warm food usually creates stronger smells which may cause nausea. Try picking cold food for your meals such as salad.
Don’t lie down after a meal
Lying down will make digestion slower and thus prolong the feeling of unease. Wait a few minutes after eating before you go to bed.
Drink more fluids
Staying hydrated during pregnancy is important. Keep your water bottle close and try adding some lemon juice to it. It’s better to drink between the meals, and not during them.
Drinking may ease nausea. Just don’t go for sodas and other drinks high in carbohydrates.
Try ginger
Ginger is popular in Chinese medicine for its stomach relieving properties. Try drinking ginger tea, ginger ale, or get some ginger-flavored candies.
Check your vitamins
You may be drinking some pregnancy-related supplements already. Check them for vitamin B6. It has been shown to reduce nausea for pregnant women.
Exercise
Being active during pregnancy will benefit both the mom and the baby. Don’t do anything that you didn’t do before the pregnancy, but keep some activity level even if you don’t feel like it. A 20-minute walk can do wonders, and even relieve some of the morning sickness symptoms.
