Starting to offer your baby first solid food might be scary and exciting at the same time. Baby lead weaning is a great way how to make this journey enjoyable, healthy, and fun for you and your baby. It also teaches your child independence, helps to develop fine motor skills, and gives you a bit more freedom during mealtime.
Here are some supplies you’ll need when you start giving your baby solid food. These range from books on baby lead weaning and baby-friendly recipes, followed by utensils, bibs, and even a crinkle cutter.
Let’s check out which of these things might make your baby lead weaning journey easier!
Simple & Safe Baby-Led Weaning book
Before you start offering your child food based on the baby lead weaning principles you need to educate yourself. This book is a great guide on the basic concepts of baby lead weaning. It’s also great if you suspect that your baby might have inherited some allergies as it offers methods on how to introduce new foods in a safe way, how any allergies might look like, and which foods to avoid completely.
Drinking independently from a cup is no easy task for a baby who is just learning how to control their hands. Help to develop independent drinking skills by providing your child with a cup with 2 handles for an easier grip. Having a silicone cup for learning is also beneficial as you won’t have to worry about it breaking when your child inevitably will throw it on the ground.
Fox Cub Suction Plate
A natural bamboo plate with separate sections will help you to organize food for your child in a fun way. And if your toddler refuses to eat one of the foods that you have offered, it will not spoil the other foods, as they are separated.
Bamboo is also great because it won’t get hot from the food that you serve. So when your child touches the plate it will be just at room temperature.
Another great feature is the suction bottom for the plate. It will help to have a little bit less to clean up after the meal as your child will be less likely to throw the plate off the table.
Silicone Baby Bibs
Waterproof baby bibs with a food-catching pocket are exactly what you need when the baby starts eating solid food. This bib is also super easy to clean – just wash it with soapy water or put it in a dishwasher.
It is important to give vegetables and fruit to your child as a part of a healthy diet. In baby lead weaning moms usually prepare slices of steamed potatoes, carrots, apples, and other vegetables. These slices may be hard for your child to grasp. A solution to this is to cut slices of vegetables or fruit so that they would have wavy sides and would be easier for babies to grasp.
Montessori utensil set
If you are following the Montessori principles then you will want to use stainless steel utensils for your baby. These are safe due to rounded fork tines design, no sharp points or edges. They are specifically made to be ergonomic – to fit the baby’s small mouth and hands.
Learning spoon and fork set
If you aren’t comfortable giving your child a set of stainless steel utensils, then you might want to consider this set of a spoon and a fork made of very soft and flexible BPA-free material. The utensils have bendable parts so that you could adjust them to your baby’s hold.
Lion Baby Feeding Set
This set of a plate, spoon, and fork is another great option for fun baby meals. It has a cute design, doesn’t slip, and it’s easy to care for. After a meal, you can put it into a dishwasher or clean it with warm and soapy water.
You can place a splat mat under the high chair to avoid a mess after the meal. You can wipe it afterward or put it into a washing machine. When your toddler grows, you can use this mat under the arts and crafts projects as well to protect the surrounding surfaces.
Full cover wearable sleeved bibs
If you want to avoid any mess from eating ending up on your child’s clothes, then full cower bibs are just for you. A great feature is adjustable back and waist tie closure. It will become useful after your baby’s first birthday, as then the little ones become more sneaky and try to take off any bibs that have been put on them.
