If you’re pregnant, it’s only natural to worry about the kind of pain that comes with it. After all, period pain is no walk in the park.
But is pregnancy really more painful than a period? Let’s find out by comparing them side-by-side.
What Causes Pain During a Period?
During your menstrual cycle, your uterus contracts and relaxes to help expel its lining. These uterine contractions can cause cramps and other abdominal discomforts.
In addition to cramps, some people experience headaches, backache, nausea, dizziness, and even vomiting during their periods.
This type of pain is usually short-lived—it tends to start shortly before or after your period begins and goes away as soon as your period ends.
What Causes Pain During Pregnancy?
When you’re pregnant, your body goes through many changes that can cause discomfort or even pain. For example, due to the increased production of hormones like progesterone and relaxin, ligaments become softer in preparation for childbirth which can lead to pelvic discomfort or lower backache.
Your abdomen may also feel tight because of expanding skin and muscles as well as pressure from your growing baby bump.
In addition to these common pains experienced during pregnancy, some women may have occasional Braxton Hicks contractions—these are mild contractions of the uterus that can be uncomfortable but are not a sign of labor or delivery.
It’s impossible to say definitively whether pregnancy pain is more intense than period pain since everyone experiences both differently. That said, if you want an easy answer then no – some pregnancies are not painful at all (excluding the pain of childbirth itself).
And for many people, the first trimester is the most uncomfortable due to nausea. You can adjust your eating habits to lighten the pregnancy nausea and hang in there. The good news is that most women report feeling better in the second trimester when their bodies begin adjusting to the changes associated with pregnancy.
